Sinai’s orthopedic unit
is a 37-bed wing with private rooms. The unit is staffed with nurses and therapists specifically trained in offering care to patients post-orthopedic surgery.

. Post surgery hospitalization typically ranges from one overnight stay to 3 day stays, depending on the type and complexity of the surgery.
Working closely with the surgical team, occupational
and physical therapists
begin the acute care rehabilitation process after joint replacement or general orthopedic surgery on the first post-operative day. After joint replacements, patients are seen by a physical therapist twice daily and an occupational therapist once daily on their first three days after surgery. Patients post general orthopedic surgeries are evaluated and treated as needed based on the therapy assessment. Treatment is provided at the bedside and in our therapy gym.
- Physical therapists assess gait and mobility and work to restore muscle strength and joint range of motion after surgery, recommending use of assistive devices when necessary.
- Occupational therapists assess and work to improve the patient’s independence with activities of daily living such as bathing and dressing.
When necessary adaptive equipment is used to maintain hip precautions and overcome knee joint range of motion limitations.
When appropriate, patients may continue their rehabilitation course at Sinai’s Rehabilitation Hospital
, where patients receive 3 hours of therapy daily.
