Purpose
The one-year Fellowship offers training in the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. The Fellowship will be based in Sinai Orthopedic Associates at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. The Fellow will gain experience in the assessment of patient symptoms, physical examination, radiographic evaluation (including MRI and other advanced modalities when indicated), therapeutic and diagnostic injection techniques, casting, nonoperative treatment modalities (including physical therapy), and the decision process involved in recommending surgical treatment. The Fellowship provides exposure to and participation in the care of recreational and competitive athletes, as well as the opportunity to provide on-field team physician coverage at local high schools. The Fellow may participate in surgeries at his or her discretion (observatory role to augment understanding of the various musculoskeletal pathologies involved) and will be encouraged to engage in clinical research in accordance with the Fellow’s interests and in consultation with the Fellowship director. The primary responsibility will be in the clinical outpatient setting; seeing patients with and under the direction of the attending physicians. Fellows will be expected to read on a regular basis to supplement their education. There will be two Fellow(s) per year.
Qualifications
Ideally, the Fellow will be a fully trained Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine, Internal Medicine or Family Practice physician desiring additional training. However, a medical school graduate seeking training prior to an Orthopedic Surgery Residency would also be considered. Fellow(s) will obtain the appropriate Maryland medical license.
Scope of Practice
The Fellow will work under the direction and supervision of the physicians in the practice in evaluating patients and documenting their care. The Fellow will be expected to work full time, Monday to Friday, and participate in the regularly scheduled educational conferences (three to four per week), as well as individual weekly conferences with the attending staff. These discussions will consist of various clinical topics and literature review.
Compensation
Salary is commensurate with a PGY5 salary. Malpractice and health insurance is included in the compensation package. Three (3) weeks vacation with additional time available
for educational meetings and board certification obligations.
Philosophy
The Fellowship offers an in-depth educational experience but also practical skills that will enable the Fellow to independently treat nonoperative musculoskeletal conditions. The Fellowship will be flexible enough to address individual needs and career aspirations while still imparting the essential core information and knowledge. The orthopedic community at Sinai in general and Sinai Orthopedic Associates in particular are well suited for this task.
Evaluation
The program director assumes the responsibility of evaluating each Fellow’s progress via direct observation, discussion, and participation in conferences. Fellows will be formally informed of this in a quarterly meeting with the program director.
