This conference will bring together the world leaders in hip and knee joint preservation and reconstruction. The course format will consist of fast paced, lively discussions, didactic presentations, and surgical case presentations. The goal is to identify, outline, and discuss the current state of knowledge in the clinical and basic sciences as they pertain to the diagnosis and treatment of hip and knee disorders in adult patients.
Topics discussed will include the latest technology, surgical approaches, techniques, prostheses, computer-assisted surgery/robotics, and the business of total joint arthroplasty in our new health care environment. General topics will include infection, revision, how to manage defects, patient selection, and bone deficiency.
Surgical approaches to the hip that will be taught will include the anterior, anterolateral, and posterior approaches. Comparisons will be made among different bearing surfaces, such as polyethylene, ceramic-on-ceramic, ceramic-onpolyethylene, and metal-on-metal. Stem selection for primary and revision total hip arthroplasty will be presented. Faculty will examine options to treat bone deficiency and the presence of metal ions.
During the sessions on knee arthroplasty, compression-molded, highly cross-linked, and vitamin E polyethylene will be introduced. The use of custom blocks and custom components will be considered. Faculty will discuss the merits and flaws of cementing versus press-fit technology and whether infected knee arthroplasty should be treated with static or mobile spacers. Faculty will also present a comprehensive range of materials to manage defects, including morselized bone graft, cement, bulk allograft, and cones. Patient selection and implant options for patellofemoral arthroplasty will be discussed.

Pre-Course Hip and Knee Cadaver Lab: New Innovations in Total Knee Arthroplasty and Direct Anterior versus Watson-Jones Approach

Participants will gain first-hand experience in cadaveric dissections using various techniques for the treatment of arthritis and joint preservation of the hip and knee joints. The morning session will be dedicated to the latest advances in the direct anterior and Watson Jones approaches of the hip. The afternoon will cover new innovations in total knee arthroplasty. Due to the low ratio of surgeons to specimens, registration is limited. Transportation between the anatomy lab and the Four Seasons Hotel will be provided.
- Practice primary total hip arthroplasty using the direct anterior and Watson Jones techniques that allow increased extensile exposure of the hip and wide exposure of the proximal femoral diaphysis.
- Learn how to perform minimally invasive unicompartmental arthroplasty while preserving the maximum amount of normal tissue.
- Gain an understanding of innovative techniques that are used to perform total knee arthroplasty.
